The Big Combo (1955) is a gripping gangster movie. Cornel Wilde is the tenacious cop determined to bring down a ruthless and sadistic mobster played by Richard Conte. Often overlooked, this movie is a fine example of the evocative film noir style that became so popular during the 40’s and 50’s. John Alton’s stylistic photography creates an atmosphere of harsh gritty reality that draws the viewer into a sordid underworld of crime, greed and murder. In Kansas City Confidential (1952) Joe Rolfe (John Payne) an ex GI working as a deliveryman finds himself framed for a payroll robbery. After being released for lack of evidence he sets out determined to find the gang that committed the crime and set him up. In its day this film was considered to be exceptionally brutal, depicting graphic violence rarely seen before.
